Are you an ebook author just starting to think about selling resale rights to your product?
If so, here’s a short entry on the types of rights you can sell, and some nifty ways to turn the biggest profit for your efforts.
In a nutshell, you’ll be selling your eBook with Basic or Master Resell Rights. Resell Rights gives the reseller the right to resell a product.
Basic Resell Rights
If a customer buys Basic Resale Rights to your product, s/he will have the right to resell the product, but not the right to resell the rights to the product.
Master Resell Rights
If a customer buys Master Resell Rights to your product, s/he will have the right to resell the product as well as sell the resale rights to the product. Master resale rights generally cost a lot more money but essentially give the customer more ways to capitalize on their initial investment (selling the ebook for personal use, selling the rights to resell the ebook, and in some cases selling the rights to resell master rights).
By placing resale rights on the table you’ve just opened up your potential market.
First, you’ll have the market of people interested in the information in your product - for personal use.
Then, you’ll have the market of people interested in the opportunity and capturing their own share of the market. Think of a reseller as a franchisee. They’re continuously on the lookout for good products as an income opportunity.
A ‘reseller’ can only resell eBooks that they’ve purchased the rights to, not the rights, but they do get to keep 100% of the purchase price for their efforts of finding the customers and to offset their business cost. If they’re wise, they’ll also stay in touch with their customers for the opportunity to market to them over and over again.
If you’re worried that by selling resale rights you’ve just lost the opportunity to capture your audience’s contact information (and potentially lose out on any back-end income) there’s a few easy techniques to gain some of that ‘ground’ back.
You simply need to include a few links within the product back to your website, your auto-responder sequence or your personal email address and give the reader a good reason to click those links! (A free bonus product, course, consultation, etc.)
Make Money With Resale Rights eBooks
Here are the very basic ways to profit by selling your eBook with Reseller’s Rights:
- Most obvious - the upfront sale, the product with resale rights. This is one shot income, selling your eBook with resale rights.
- Built-in income. The part you need to use your brain for: building in affiliate links into the product embedded into your eBook. You’ll want to take some care on how you do this and how many you build-in. We’ll talk more about the nuances of that on another day.
- Charge A Rebranding Fee. You could charge your resellers more money to allow them to change the built-in income links to their own affiliate identity.
- Selling Master Rights. Allow full rights. Your customer can then move on to selling the ebook as a product, or as a product with resale rights. This gives your product more ‘reach’ (which is great if you have some built-in income within the ebook).
- Sell Source Code or Private Label Rights. This package is where you may make more on the initial sale, but lose all control over the back-end, built-in or potential customer list. Your product package will include the source code (in the case of an ebook the .doc or text file), as well as any of the finished files (pdf, jpg, gif, html, etc.).
There you have it.
If you have a product and you’re thinking of selling the rights to your ebook, you’ll want to think carefully about what types of rights you will offer, what the potential loss and gain it will mean to you financially, and what conditions or stipulations you will set upon the sale.
